Beneficial bacteria (BB') are essential to the health of a thriving aquarium, and they are more likely to be surface-level inhabitants. Most bacteria are between 0.2 and 2.0 micrometers, with some ranging up to 10 micrometers in length, making them well-suited to colonize the many microenvironments available in an aquarium. Due to their small size and need for nutrients, bacteria thrive on surfaces with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio. Ceramic media, with their often porous and rough surfaces, can provide an exceptional habitat for these bacteria. Especially when ceramic media have a sculptural surface that further increases the available area for colonization. BB's form colonies that are a key part of the miniature ecosystem in your aquarium. The bacteria use high surface area to take up nutrients from the surrounding water, and they can continue to grow and reproduce at a steady rate. Studio Tsubo celebrates the tiny but essential contributors to the aquarium's health, by creating elaborate plantable vessels in the form of richly textured ceramic sculptures. An invitation for BB's to join the party and come out of the filter and into the foreground. Over time, each sculpture will develop a colorful patina. Surfaces are adorned with complex textural relief that becomes enriched with Algae and Bacterial Bio Gel. Cultivate beauty throughout the entire cycle, from the BB microscopic janitors to the plants and animals. Celebrate the entire cycle and enhance your awareness of the aquarium ecosystem as you create natural scenes of beauty and contemplation.
